Dr. Newman uses the most advanced techniques for both hip and knee replacement, including revision hip and knee replacement. He performs the minimally invasive anterior hip approach as well as mini anterolateral approach. In addition, Dr. Newman uses muscle sparing approaches with fast track rehabilitation techniques for his total knee replacement. He has performed nearly 5,000 joint replacements during his career in the Navy and at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, returning thousands of hard-working men and women, as well as weekend warriors, back to the lifestyle they enjoy. He also specializes in hip fracture surgeries, allowing those with unexpected injury return to their normal function as soon as possible. Dr. Newman’s professional interest also lies in giving back to those that are underserved and he has been involved in Operation Walk, performing hip and knee replacement surgeries in third world countries and is interested in starting a chapter in Maine. Dr. Newman moved to Maine in 2015 after retiring from the United States Navy, serving his final years as the Chief of Arthroplasty and Oncology at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. Dr. Newman lives in Falmouth with his wife and two children and enjoys skiing at Sugarloaf, boating in Casco Bay, and golfing around the state.

Treatment Philosophy
I feel my main job as a surgeon is to be an educator. I always treat patients as individuals, with individual goals, desires, and backgrounds. If I have done my job well, then the patient will know which path of treatment best suits their life. I find no greater joy than getting to know each and every one of my patients, find out what they love, and be a part of returning them to that endeavor. I am also dedicated to lifelong learning. In this world of ever-changing technology and advances in surgical techniques, I strive to stay ahead of the curve, always questioning what will actually help patients and what is yet to be proven. In my time of teaching young surgeons in the Navy, I always taught them that there are three things that make you a good surgeon: knowing the most medicine you can know, having the skilled hands to perform the surgery, and the ability to talk to, empathize and relate to your patients as individuals.
