What is Dry Needling?

Dry needling involves the use of thin, solid needles to alleviate muscle stiffness and discomfort. Although it may resemble acupuncture, dry needling is a more recent technique that specifically targets the muscles rather than focusing on chi, energy flow, or acupoints. This method effectively releases trigger points, or knots, within the muscles, promoting increased mobility and strength. For many patients, dry needling can be an effective treatment option to reduce pain and help them return to their daily activities.

What to Expect

When you come in for your dry needling appointment, our provider will conduct a thorough assessment of your condition. They will determine if dry needling is suitable for you and will explain the specific areas where the needles will be applied and how the process works. To enhance your treatment, electrical stimulation is frequently used alongside dry needling to effectively address your condition.

Following your appointment, we recommend avoiding anti-inflammatory medications. Instead, you may use acetaminophen, ice, and heat to manage any soreness that may occur post-treatment. Staying active, gently stretching the affected area, and maintaining proper hydration can support your healing journey. Many patients begin to notice positive results after just a few sessions.

Dry Needling for Low Back Pain

Back pain can significantly impact your quality of life. Dry needling offers relief by alleviating muscle spasms and cramps, enhancing mobility, and addressing nerve pain that radiates into your leg. During the procedure, needles are typically inserted into the muscles surrounding your spine, hip, and leg. Additionally, electrical stimulation may be applied to promote the healing of muscles and nerves.

Dry Needling for Tennis Elbow/Golfer's Elbow

Elbow pain frequently results from overuse, particularly in sports like golf, tennis, and pickleball. When the muscles around the elbow become sore, it can lead to discomfort while gripping, carrying, or moving the elbow. Dry needling offers an effective alternative to medication, providing rapid relief from muscle pain. This technique involves placing needles on the inner or outer side of the elbow to "reset" the affected muscles and enhance their function.

Dry Needling for Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a common disease that makes walking, standing, and getting through your daily life difficult. This disease can cause calf and ankle pain in addition to heel pain. Dry needling can be a great treatment for improving stiffness and discomfort through these areas by releasing the calf muscle, reducing heel pain, and improving your walking mechanics.
